Post-Secondary Information

Examples of vocational school programs include but are not limited to:
Cosmetology, Dental Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Auto Mechanic, Welding

Examples of community college programs include but are not limited to:
Registered Nurse, Firefighter, Early Childhood Education, Graphic Design

If you plan to go straight into the workforce after graduation and not attend a post-secondary school or the military, you will have to make sure to research what job opportunities are out there based on your interest(s) and do the work to apply to the one(s) that best fits you.

Know that it is beneficial to look at companies/organizations that offer the opportunity for you to move up/advance within the company and/or be able to help pay for school for you if you decide to attend in the future.

Keep in mind that if your desire is to spend less time attending school and save money, consider attending a vocational school or a community college. This would give you a chance to attend school for a short period of time, save money on costs, and go into the workforce right afterward with the potential to earn more money.

ASVAB TEST:

The military has developed a test called the ASVAB, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, which measures a student's aptitudes and abilities. Once this test is completed and scored, a recruiter will meet with a student to discuss the results. The ASVAB will be administered at MHS once every school year. Please listen to the announcement.

The military has trained many generations to become upstanding citizens. The training received in the newest technologies, in mechanics, in communications, and in the many other fields offered through the armed services are skills that are required to succeed in the future.

Recruiters from all branches meet with interested students at MHS through the College and Career Visits. They act as motivators for these students to make sure that they graduate with the required courses and grade point averages.

If you know you want to go to college but are unsure of what you want to do as a career, possibly look at attending a community college or vocational school first because it will cost less money as you try to figure out what career you want. Contacting businesses and organizations to set up a job shadow is a great way to get exposure to a potential career to see whether you like or do not like it before you decide whether to pursue it.

Once you know what career field you would like to pursue, research schools you would like to attend that provide the school/training that you need for your specific career. Make sure the school you attend is accredited.

Find out what the school's admission requirements are and follow them. Apply as soon as possible, schools have deadlines and may have a maximum capacity requirement.

Choosing a career or being aware of what type of career field(s) you are interested in is necessary before you can determine what type of schooling/training you will need. This is also the same for if you want to go straight into the workforce after graduation.
